BeeAfrican, a social enterprise founded by Mems Ramaila (a beekeeper herself) was set up in 2019 to collaborate with other organisations in accelerating the women economic empowerment agenda through the delivery of three impacts with bees as an enabling critical resource. The three impacts are as follows 1. Social impact 2. Economic impact 3. Environmental impact Central to the social impact is the work we do at grassroots level in bridging the bee ecosystem knowledge gap by educating rural women and youth about the significance of honey bees for sustainable living. Our efforts in delivering the economic impact is informed by our ambitious yet practical plan to incorporate 10 000 rural women (by 2024) in the honey value chain by creating sustainable beekeeping enterprises with BeeAfrican as an anchor for training, mentorship and market linkage. Our climate adaptation strategy (for environmental impact) is rooted in the cultivation of drought resistant plants, that serve as both forage for bees and edible crops for human beings, thus strengthening food and nutrition security. Of importance though, these drought resistant plants will be planted along the perimeters of homesteads as wind breakers in rural communities for fending off strong winds that usually demolish house roof tops.
