It is widely acknowledged that the knowledge economy represents the future of economic growth for both developed and developing nations. This knowledge comprises intellectual capital, skills proficiency and the potential for innovation, and is driven firmly by information. More specifically, by people’s access to, and ability to share and exchange, reliable information. As a leader in the South African information industry, Sabinet is perfectly poised to help facilitate the development of the knowledge economy in South Africa, which will be fuelled by access to information -rich sources such as local libraries and relevant public and private organisations. Our well-established client base features exactly that: an extensive range of local and international libraries as well as various public and private organisations for which we have implemented innovative information management solutions. This reflects our positive growth; during the past 30 years, our commitment to facilitating access to information has seen us flourish from providing purely library support services – central platforms for collaboration and resource sharing among libraries – to offering customised information-centric services for libraries, corporates, small businesses, students, the media and researchers. Our strong focus on African information has resulted in Sabinet hosting the most comprehensive, searchable collection of full-text African electronic journals available on one platform, which has further cemented our position as one of the most reliable and relevant specialist information providers in Africa. Solid partnerships have been a hallmark of our 30-year heritage and remain a priority today, as is evident in our affiliation with the Online Computer Library Centre (OCLC), a global membership computer library service and research organisation dedicated to furthering access to the world’s information and reducing information costs. This augments our core offering, enabling us to truly provide world-class products and services to libraries across Africa. OUR OFFERING In line with the requirements of the future knowledge economy, our holistic information offering comprises library solutions and information services. COMPREHENSIVE LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS Our library solutions include cataloguing, interlending and reference services, and are used extensively by academic, public, government and corporate libraries within South Africa and across the African continent. These customisable solutions aim to assist our clients in operating effectively and efficiently, minimising costs and optimising workflows; aim to provide easy access to credible, accurate and up-to-date information; and aim to save costs by reducing duplication. With a collection of more than 300 journals that are widely used by local and international organisations, as well as more than 120 000 articles from the open access retrospective African Journal Archive, we have built a formidable reputation as a provider of both library and digital collection management systems. DEDICATED JOURNAL, LEGAL, NEWS RESEARCH AND AFRICAN INFORMATION Our extensive information service includes access to legal information, African online journals, news research information, the African Digital Repository, the African Studies Collection, business tenders and our own specialised reference database. As a renowned provider of original African journal and South African legal content, we continuously source and make available new online content from and about Africa. With our extensive database of new and old information, including an electronic journal archive that dates back more than a century, users are able to access cross-referenced material from the convenience of their desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile device. The database comprises bibliographic and citation references, news archives and a growing collection of more than 500 aggregated premier African journals and publications, making it one of the largest and most easily accessible collections of its kind. References and metadata are also incorporated into the indexes of the major search engines and distributed to aggregators worldwide to ensure effective visibility of this content. Our vast collection of legal content is also widely used by libraries, individuals and public and private organisations. It provides access to current information on the latest bills and legislation as well as historical and archived information. PRESERVING CONTENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS A critical pillar of the knowledge economy is the availability of information in electronic format, specifically old and out of print content, and information only available in hard copy. We strive to meet this objective through our specialised and customised digitisation service which, over the past 20 years, has refined the process of making content in virtually any format available electronically to ensure its preservation and easy dissemination.
